| I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Rose-Hulman in 1985. Although the price my parents & I paid for my tuition was expensive, the technical knowledge I gained there was priceless. I gained a foundation for structured approaches to problems and systemic thinking -- tools I use to this day. After graduation, I spent the next ten years in quality engineering roles: manufacturing engineer at Texas Instruments (1985 - 1987), quality engineer at Naval Avonics Center (1985 - 1992), quality engineering statistician at Cummins Inc. (1992 - 1994), and quality engineering manager at Boehringer Mannheim (1994 - 1996). I implemented several statistical process control (SPC) programs in automotive and electronics manufacturing environments, and conducted countless designed experiments during process development & improvement initiatives. I eventually developed and conducted in-house training courses for SPC and design of experiments (DOE). As I did more work in modeling the past, I developed a growing interest in inventing the future using creative thinking techniques. I was totally absorbed with studying Edward de Bono's work in my spare time in the early 1990s. Although doing so wasn't in my job description at the time, I designed and conducted in-house training courses for my fellow employees. Even today, I periodi- cally put on one of de Bono's Six Thinking Hats, or conduct a short random input exercise. |
